About This Event

The Durham Miners' Gala, known locally as 'The Big Meeting', is the largest trade union event in Europe and one of the most spectacular community celebrations in the country. Dating back to 1871, this annual gathering brings tens of thousands of people to the streets of Durham City.

The highlight is the magnificent parade of colliery banners, each accompanied by a brass band, marching through the narrow streets to the old Racecourse where political speeches are delivered. In the afternoon, a miners' service is held in Durham Cathedral. The atmosphere is electric, with music, colour, and a powerful sense of solidarity filling the city.

Whether you have mining connections or simply want to experience this unique piece of living history, the Gala is an unforgettable day that celebrates community, heritage, and the enduring spirit of the North East's mining communities.
